I've studied The Scarlet Letter in my English class and wrote this to give Hester a voice
I knew that I shouldn’t have
But I didn’t think it through
And he loved me just as much
Now though, I wonder
I look at this child
This sprite in my arms
Then her eyes focus-not on I
But on that scarlet stain
That heavy weight
Which will ever serve as a reminder of my sin.
Each day that I see him
The father of my child
My heart twists in pain
Knowing we can’t be together
Then a shadow from my past
That man whom I though dead
Appears with a finger to his lips,
And a smile on his face
He has a dark look about him
Searching for revenge
Consumed with a hatred,
Waiting to torture my love.
Then I look all around me
At this pious group of people
And realize that everyone
Has a hidden sin.
